Colonia del Sacramento
was found by the Portuguese. The sovereignty of Colonia was
switched between the Portuguese and the Spaniards eleven times.
Interestingly enough, although it was a Portuguese colony, today
the residents speak Spanish instead of Portuguese. Colonia was
declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Three decades ago the
milk cart shown in the top picture was used by the farmers to
deliver dairy products to the residents, but today it is
inactive, of course.
Les Eclaireurs (Enlighteners or Scouts) Lighthouse
at the Beagle Channel is called the "Lighthouse at the End of
the World" because it is the southernmost lighthouse on earth.
The lighthouse is remote-controlled and powered by solar panels.
