Kuhn-Yin or Virgin Mary?

Drum-wave Island China

December 2012

Photos taken by Alex Yu

In 1842 China was forced to open her door to the West after being defeated by the United Kingdom at the Opium War. Afterwards, Drum-wave Island was one of the ports where most Westerners resided. In the Island there are many mixed-architectural styles blending the Chinese and the Western forms. The first photo shows an obvious example, but the mixed features exhibited in the goddess (the third photo) are subtle. This Kuhn-yin carries some elements that are found in Virgin Mary.
