The Olympics cauldron
shown above was erected for the 2010
Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It was lit up
during
the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Games, of course. Since then it
is lit
on very special occasions only, such as the opening of the new Cactus
Club Restaurant
in 2013, the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Summer
Games in
Rio, Brazil. You may wonder why this spectacular event is rarely held.
Put it
bluntly, lighting up this monument is burning money! The minimum charge
by the
managing company (Vancouver Convention Center) is $5,000 for up to four
hours. On
October 16, 2018 the Society of Research Administrators International
paid the
Conference Center to light up the monument to celebrate its 50th
anniversary. I
am very glad that I could take advantage of this opportunity.
The last two photos were
taken in Museum of Vancouver.
