The Key West Lighthouse is located in Key West, of course. What is special about this lighthouse? Traditionally lighthouse keepers were men and the whole family of the keeper lived in a house next to the lighthouse. However, Michael Mabrity, the first keeper of the Key West Lighthouse, died of yellow fever in 1832. Instead of moving out, his widow, Barbara, inherited and kept the job for 32 years. It was a tough job, which required around-the-clock supervision of the facility. To keep the lamp running, she had to carry 40-pound of fuel to the top of the lighthouse.
