March 2024

Constructed in 1937 by Doris Duke as both a residence and a venue to display her Islamic art collection, Shangri La housed around 4,500 pieces and cultural artifacts from across the globe. Duke sought the expertise of contemporary artisans from India and the Middle East to craft entire interiors, which were then transported and reassembled in Honolulu. In 2002, this home was transformed into a museum. Due to its limited access, securing a ticket requires planning several months ahead. Fortunately, I bought the last ticket in March.
