Our family recently
explored several French Polynesian
islands, including Tahiti, Moorea,
Raiatea, Taha'a, Bora Bora, and Huahine.
These islands are renowned for their
stunning coral reefs, which thrive in the
tropical waters of the region. The world's
coral reefs face a dire situation. Since
the 1950s, over half have vanished, with
the International Commission on Climate
Change warning that continued climate
change threatens nearly all remaining
reefs. This urgency drives many to witness
these natural wonders before it's too
late.
In order to capture the beauty of the
coral reefs and tropical fishes, I often
ventured extremely close to the underwater
formations. This proximity often resulted
in cuts on my legs from sharp coral edges.
We used two underwater cameras, with some
images in the series taken by my wife,
Josephine Wong. While corals exist
globally, the vibrant reef ecosystems we
encountered are unique to tropical and
subtropical oceans, making our French
Polynesian experience particularly special
and memorable.
