Are people allowed
to eat these beautiful fishes? Many
tropical fish species are consumed as
food, particularly in coastal communities
near coral reefs. Nevertheless, tropical
fishes have varying levels of protection,
and regulations on their consumption
differ depending on the location and
species. French Polynesia has laws and
regulations to protect its marine
ecosystems, including tropical fishes. As
part of France, French Polynesia
participates in international agreements
on marine conservation. During our trip,
we enjoyed numerous seafood meals for both
lunch and dinner. Interestingly, despite
the abundance of colorful fish we observed
in the reefs, none of these vibrant
species appeared on any of the restaurant
menus we encountered.
