The soft focus effect is also known as "Barbara
Walter effect." As the name implies,
the effect works well for mature women who would like to smooth their
skin. Some people argue that it is unnecessary to apply this effect to
children because their face is already smooth. Use of the pastel effect is
controversial, too. Some people like to retain the essence of the colorful
subject while some contends that less is more. My preference is using both
effects if I wants to create an angelic appearance. In this set of photos
I tried all combinations: sharp focus, soft focus, soft focus and pastel,
sharp focus and pastel...etc. Which one is better? You be the judge.
