A sadhu is a holy man or an ascetic in Hinduism and Jainism. The literal meaning of "sadhu" is "straight, right, leading straight to goal." As the name implies, these holy men had retreated from the worldly life, which is considered a distraction, in an attempt to achieve spiritual liberation through meditation and contemplation. The red line on their forehead is the mark of Vishnu, the second deity of Hindu's "trinity." There are three supreme gods in Hinduism, namely, Brahma (creator), Vishnu (protector or preserver), and Shiva (destroyer).
