Film noir is a cinematic genre primarily used to characterize stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that accentuate cynical attitudes and motivations. The term finds its origins in French, translating to "black film" or "dark film," aptly reflecting the genre's characteristic dark and moody atmosphere. The period spanning the 1940s and 1950s is widely acknowledged as the "classic period" of American film noir. Film noir from this era is closely associated with a low-key, black-and-white visual style, influenced by German Expressionist cinematography.
