Stars Observed outside Grand Canyon

During a recent trip to Grand Canyon North Rim, our group stayed in Kaibab Lodge, which is 5-mile away from North Rim. The elevation of that location is about 8840 feet. In addition, there is no light pollution in the mountain. Moreover, the dry climate of Arizona reduces visual distortion. What more can you ask for? This is the ideal site for astro-photography. The location is perfect, but my equipment is not the best. Usually star photographers lock the shutter for a very long exposure in order to record the star trail. I have a cable release to lock the shutter, but I don't have anything to secure the tripod. It was too cold for me to stay outside for hours, and as a compromise, each of the preceding pictures was exposed for 5 minutes only.
