Painted Hills is one of the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. This amazing landscape is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon. The other two units are Sheep Rock and Clarno. Due to time constraints I stopped by Painted Hills and Sheep Rock only. Painted Hills is so named because of its colorful layers resulting from different formation processes spanning across different geological eras. The most outstanding red layers are composed of laterite soil accumulated by floods.
