Many plants in Los Angeles were imported from
Asia, such as cherry and Japanese Maples trees. Spring is the prime time
for cherry blossom, and thus many events in LA center around this theme.
However, due to the Tsunami in Japan in April 2011 and the problems in
fundraising, the Southern California Cherry Blossom Festival, which was
held in Little Tokyo District in the past, were cancelled this year.
Nonetheless, there was another Cherry Blossom Festival held in Descanso
Gardens from March 24 to 25.
The cherry trees planted in Descanso Gardens produce flowers only.
Needless to say, don't expect that you can pick up their fruits. Unlike
Japan, there is no freezing winter in LA. But the cherry trees in Descanso are genetically pre-programmed to be dormant during the winter
season. Because they preserve all their energies in winter, they are
able to provide the viewers with a spectacular show in spring.
