Steampunk
is a theme related to
science fiction inspired by 19th-century steam-powered technology.
During
the British Victorian era and American "Wild West" period, steam
power was the cutting edge technology that overcame our physical
limitations. For
the first time in history humans were able to travel very far by
steamboat and
train. Based on this seemingly endless advancement of technology
several writers
boldly fantasized the future and alternate realties. Well-known
examples are H.
G. Wells’ novels “The time machine” and “The first man in the moon.” In
short, the Victorian era is the age of exploration and adventure, and
therefore Steampunkers are also called neo-Victorians.
Today
many
cities in the
US hold steampunk events for people to
express their experimental spirit. Oxnard
Steampunk
Festival is one of these events. These people might seem odd and even
"crazy," but imagination is the source of innovation. Although I don't
dress like a steampunker, my mind is steampunked.
