Coal Mine Canyon, AZ

Coal Mine Canyon, which is just 12 miles away from Tuba City, is a hidden gem of Arizona. It is virtually unknown because the place is inside the Indian Reservation. Going there without a permit is considered trespassing. As you expect, there is no sign, no paved road, and no facility. However, even though my team obtained the permit, it was prohibited to hike down the canyon; rather, we were allowed to walk along the rim only.

One of the distinguished landmarks in Coal Mine Canyon is a White Hoodoo. Although this hoodoo is not as spectacular as the Wahweap Hoodoos in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, this mystical object still captures people's imagination.

According to a Navajo's legend, once a Navajo woman and her family walked along the rim. Unfortunately, her husband and child accidentally fell into the canyon and died. The heart-broken wife returned to the spot every night for the rest of her life, and eventually turned herself into a figure-rock.

Hopis believe that the figure was a woman who fell and died in the canyon while attempting to touch the spirits. She was buried there, but later she rose from her grave and now appears under the moonlight once a while.
