In 1956 a fire destroyed Rodia's house, which was adjacent to the Watts Towers. The Department of Building and Safety wanted to demolish the remaining parts of Rodia's property, including the Watts Towers. Fortunately, some citizens collected signatures to file a petition to save the towers. Today the Watts Towers is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
