Many historic events happened in Vizcaya. For example, in 1987 President Ronald Reagan received Pope John Paul II in Vizcaya. In 1989 the first Summit of the Americas, hosted by President Bill Clinton, was held in Vizcaya. In the summit leaders of 34 nations signed the treaty of the Free Trade Area of the Americas.
