The summit of Haleakalā volcano manifests as a vast erosional valley, shaped by the rimrock lava flows that erupted approximately 145,000 years ago. Haleakalā National Park, established independently in 1961, encompasses this geological marvel, spanning 47 square miles (122 square km).
