Paint Mines Interpretive Park is the best kept secret in Colorado.
It is located in a small town named Calhan. Probably you may not
be aware of this colorful place when you drive by Freeway 24. The
colorful clays in this area were deposited more than 55 million
years ago and Native Americans used the resources to make pottery
and ceremonial paint. In the early 1900s the clays were mined to
make bricks. Today mining had halted and now its natural beauty is preserved for you
and me to enjoy. Had the place been protected earlier, it would
have been more colorful.
