Tafoni are small "pockets" found in fragile sandstone.
This geological term may originate from the Greek word taphos,
"tomb" because the "caves" look like tombs. Although tafoni can be formed anywhere as long as erosional forces are
present, they are commonly viewed in semi-arid and arid deserts.
Needless to say, Southwest US, including Arizona and Utah, are the
ideal location for spotting tafoni. These tafoni were photographed
along Wahweap Wash when our team was on the way to look for white
hoodoos.
