San Gabriel Playhouse is located in the Mission District of San Gabriel, California. This magnificent Spanish-styled theater was dedicated in 1927 by John McGroarty for his Mission Play, which presented the story of the founding of California missions by the Franciscan Fathers. San Gabriel is often called the "birthplace of Los Angles" because the San Gabriel missions extended outward and became the town of Los Angeles. In 1932 the theater shut down due to the Great Depression. After World War Two the City of San Gabriel took ownership of the theater, and in 2007 the City restored the original name of the theater.
