Garden Key is the second largest island in the Dry Tortugas area. On the island there is a massive structure named Fort Jefferson, which was built in the early 19^th century for protecting the sea route of the Gulf of Mexico. After the American Civil War Fort Jefferson was used as a prison to lock up those sentenced by Court-martial. In 1935 Fort Jefferson became a national monument and in 1992 it was promoted to be Dry Tortugas National Park.
