Garden Key is the second largest island in the Dry Tortugas area. On the island there is a massive structure named Fort Jefferson, which was built in the early 19th century for protecting the sea route of the Gulf of Mexico. After the American Civil War Fort Jefferson was used as a prison to lock up those sentenced by Court-martial. In 1935 Fort Jefferson became a national monument and in 1992 it was promoted to be Dry Tortugas National Park.
