The White Pocket area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management
(BLM), the same agency that issues hiking permits for Coyote
Buttes North and South. Currently no permit is required for
visiting the White Pocket. The natural barrier (the deep sand
road) has been effectively protecting the area from over-use. When
our team approached the White Pocket, a team member suggested
stopping by the BLM ranger station to check out the road
condition. But we found that the ranger station opens from March
15 to November 15 only. Fortunately, we had already downloaded all
the maps and GPS coordinates prior to the trip. If you want to
view this geological wonder, it is strongly recommended that you
prepare for the trip in advance.
